THE COMPANY
The Skull Coast Brewing Company, Inc., is the continuation of a lifelong dream. The brand itself was born in a small Charleston, South Carolina library when its founder, Dave Fox, came across a map drawn in the 1700's with the words "Skull Coast" etched along the southern coastline to define the threat colonial merchant ships faced during the Golden Age of Piracy. Skull Coast products matured and our understanding of the beer business developed during our contract brewing experience, under the Skull Coast Ale Company, LLC. Now, with a new North Carolina brewing entity, our own facility and unrestricted growth, the Skull Coast Brewing Company, Inc., hopes to become a lifelong part of your history.
THE PEOPLE
Skull Coast has literally become an entity made up of its all too human parts. The people behind the company have literally given themselves to its advancement. Therefore, they should be celebrated!
Alexa Long - BrewsterAlexa's love for craft beers came about while working in various beer-centric restaurants around Charlotte. Some of the first to capture her attention were Delirium Tremens, Youngs Double Chocolate Stout, and Rochefort 8. She became fascinated by the complexity and wide range of flavor profiles and aromas. After being on the taste-testing side only, she decided to explore this fascination further and began homebrewing in mid-2011. Alexa graduated from UNCC with a finance degree and an economics minor. She pictured herself being extremely wealthy and successful investment banker with multiple houses and boats; that is, before she realized finance is miserably boring (sorry, finance people). The beer industry is a much better fit for her laid-back personality. After pilot-batching several brews for Skull Coast and assisting during the transition, she has made the leap to her dream job as the new Skull Coast 'Brewster' (her chosen title).
Meredith Pyron - Sales SirenThough a world traveler, Meredith was raised in a small town in Northeast Georgia. Meredith’s fascination with beer began at an early age by observing her neighbor who was an avid home brewer. She sat in on his brewing sessions and was amazed that it only took one person, tools of the trade and a basement to produce something so amazing and personalized. Though too young to sample her neighbor’s yields, her college years in Colorado were spent passionately exploring the vast array of craft beers available. This passion was furthered upon her arrival in North Carolina, with weekends spent being Alexa Long’s brewing assistant. She is thrilled to be a part of the Skull Coast family and the craft brew industry in a capacity that suits her personality and allows her to deal with the public. Meredith will be splitting the Charlotte market with Wendy Underwood.
Wendy Underwood - Sales Siren
Born and raised in Charlotte, Wendy has been involved with craft beer for over five years. Her love for craft beer was cultivated by working for a local draught emporium where she began her discovery of the many styles of beer available. She found great joy in exploring the complexities of beer and what makes each beer unique. She continued her exploration, and her palate began expanding. She found herself enjoying a large range beginning with the most tart Gueuze to the most earthy Double IPA. During her time at the draught emporium, she was in charge of educating new hires about beer. This was a very fulfilling task for Wendy as she enjoyed seeing the moment when everything “clicked” for the person. Wendy is extremely excited to be a part of the Skull Coast family where she can continue to share her passion for craft brew with the public. Wendy will be splitting the Charlotte market with Meredith Pyron.
Mark Olson - First MateHailing from Lynn, MA, Mark Olson is an indispensable member of the Skull Coast family. While Mark has chosen the title of First Mate for himself, anyone who knows the internal workings of Skull Coast knows that title doesn't do him justice. In far too many ways, Mark is the heart that keeps Skull Coast pumping along. At the risk of breaking an imaginary wall, everything related to Skull Coast typically rolls through Mark first. Mark joined the company under one condition, that Skull Coast become a national brand. Only with his help, inexhaustible energy and drive can we make that happen.
