Typhoon Windswept Wheat IPA: Dry-Hopped

Yesterday, a big push was made in order to get Tortuga Bay IPA kegged and out the door for Bank of America Stadium for the Panthers vs. Saints game this Sunday. Since Howard Brewing moved up their brewing for us, they didn't have the construction of their cooler ready. So, we didn't actually have a place to put Tortuga Bay to move Typhoon over. Thankfully, we found cooler space elsewhere to keg Tortuga Bay before it was picked up. It was a crazy day, but it all worked out in the end!

Overlooked in the process was the fact that "Typhoon: Windswept Wheat IPA" was dry-hopped, and is getting ready to be carbonated. For those that don't know Typhoon is a Wheat IPA 6% ABV, hopped primarily with Palisades and Summit hops.

While it won't be at the stadium for the first game, we are hoping that it will be ready for the second game against the NY Giants. Stay tuned!

Tortuga Bay IPA - First Taste Notes

First of all, I want to once again thank Jason Howard from Howard Brewing for letting us brew in his new facility. If you get a chance to visit the Howard Brewing facility in Lenoir, I would highly recommend it.

He literally built it by himself. Today, he was doing his own plumbing for the keg washer. Everytime I visit, he is making another improvement or more construction -- by himself. It's kind of amazing! I am constantly in awe with him, and what he has been able to do by himself.

Okay, for the tasting notes on Tortuga Bay. I don't want to paraphrase Samuel L. Jackson, but I'm sure he would drop a few F-Bombs on how hoppy Tortuga Bay is. While the original thought was making a sessionable IPA, Tortuga Bay is shaping up to be a "Hop Tongue Tingler." It is also turning out to be a bit more than 6%. Due to the brewhouse efficiency (which was previously unknown), it might come in at closer to 6.3 to 6.5% ABV.

While Jason from Howard Brewing was a little concerned that he had missed his mark, I told him to, "Let it ride!" I have never known a craft beer customer that wanted a lower ABV.

Since Tortuga Bay will be unfiltered, it pours (right now) a hazy light green and faint orange. With close to 3 lbs. of hops per barrel, you can actually see the hops floating around in it. It has a huge nose! Monster. Seriously, big juicy hops. It's full-bodied, flavorful, but not sweet. It stays dry. The number of malts included keep it complex and tasty from start to finish. Crisp hops up front, and mellow drinkable malts in the middle, finishing dry and tongue tinglingly. We put the money into the hops, and you'll get your money's worth!

We have a few more days in the fermentation process, but we're hoping that it finishes as expected. Hang in there. We're close!

Sampled the New "Tortuga Bay IPA" Tonight

Okay, it's official: Alexa Long has a gift!

With little more to go on than a "Sessionable IPA" called "Tortuga Bay" (named after the infamous Pirate haven in the Caribbean), Alexa pilot brewed a 6% ABV India Pale Ale that is extremely balanced and wonderfully hoppy. I had several, thank you very much!

What differentiates this IPA from either our own higher-ABV & IBU IPAs (like Maelstrom and the soon-to-be-released Pirate King), or some other IPAs on the market, is its drinkability.

Tortuga Bay IPA is designed to be our own pirate version of a lawnmower 6% ABV, 60+ IBUs India Pale Ale for the dedicated craft beer drinker.

Just for the record, the Skull Coast version of a lawnmower beer is a minimum of 6% ABV.

One other thing you might notice from the Tortuga Bay Sessionable IPA image on the left is the colors. We want to thank Jim Synder once again for creating a color palate that was designed for the end-user. For those in the Carolinas, you might see a certain similarity to a particular NFL football team.

This beer will premiere at the beginning of the Carolina Panthers football season.
