Moving on to Senators DeMint & Graham for Small BREW Act
Monday, February 6, 2012 at 6:39PM
Hot on the heels of securing a Yes vote from Congressman Mulvaney on the House's version of the Small BREW Act, I made phone calls today to both Senator DeMint and Senator Graham of South Carolina for Senate's version of the bill, S. 534. I'm becoming quite the beer activist!
While I have yet to hear back from the legislative staff for Senator DeMint, Senator Graham's legislative aide, Spencer Williams, called me back within a couple of hours.
It was a great conversation, and it seems Mr. Williams' mother was even a homebrewer when he was growing up. How cool is that?
Mr. Williams was also surprised that the bill enjoyed bipartisan support in both the Senate and the House. He noted that is very rare in Washington, and thought this could certainly be something that shows Washington could get things done.
In the end, Mr. Williams promised to bring this to the attention of Senator Graham, and asked that I give him a week or two to let me know if Senator Graham would sign on as a cosponsor.
So, the quest continues!
UPDATE: Just received a phone call from Laura Evans from Senator DeMint's Washington DC office. Yes, at 7:30pm -- I guess some Senate offices don't work banker's hours there. At any rate, she told me that S. 534 is in the Finance Committee, and since Senator DeMint is not on that committee they are not sure what amendments have or changes have been placed on the bill. She did tell me, however, that since there is NOW consitituent support for the bill they will keep their eye on it and brief me as it moves along. Hey! SC Brewers call the Washington offices of your senators!
