Do you want to know who the hardest working brewer is in the Charlotte area? While I would like to say, "ME!" that wouldn't be honest (right now). I hung out with Matt Glidden today of Ass Clown Brewing Company, and came away inspired, impressed and a huge fan of his product!
If you haven't been to Ass Clown Brewing Company's Taproom & Brewery, GO! Don't talk about it. Don't think about it. Get in your car, buckle up and be prepared to be amazed!
The first thing you'll find is that it's going to be somewhat difficult to find. If you're like me, you'll question your GPS device. Ass Clown is located in a beautiful retail area near high-end salons and across the street from Galway Hooker's Irish Pub.
I walked by it twice.
Unfortunately, the signage outside is for some mortgage company but, if and when you visit, that's a story for Matt to tell you over a beer.
Remember when I said that the hardest working brewer in the Charlotte area was Matt? Get this: He works 10-12 hours a day to brew only 20 gallons of beer. Not 20 barrels of beer, 20 GALLONS! On weekends, he works twice as hard and doubles the output to 40 gallons. Again, please read that correctly. 40 GALLONS! A little over a barrel of beer... on weekends! Talk about passion. Unbelievable!
Here's the kicker, though. His beer is amazing! You heard that right. I'm a big fan! (Before you ask, great beer is great beer. I don't mind touting other great beers in the market.)
The 10-15 people hanging out at Ass Clown today (while I was there) and sampling his product agree with me. Freakshow good!
Let me give you my sampling (if I can remember it correctly):
1. Orange or Peach Black Ale
2. Buttered Apple Pie Amber Ale
3. India Brown Ale
4. Smoked Maple Syrup Black Ale
5. Peach Fig Pale Ale
Again, if I have these names wrong please don't hold me to it. (Sorry Matt if I got them wrong.) But, I can tell you without reservation, I enjoyed every single one of them! And, in hearing what he is working on next, I might become a fixture in his place until we can get brewing again. Please stop in and check it out. You won't be disappointed.
Before I sign off, I just want to also say something about the people that I met there at Ass Clown: Wonderful, knowledgeable, craft beer aficionados without being beer snobs. A true delight to spend time with.
Cheers!
